Brangus Registry

Brangus is a breed-up breed in SteerJock — there are no Gen 0 Brangus. You build them by crossing registered Angus and Brahman toward the stabilized 3/8 Brahman + 5/8 Angus ratio, then breeding true from there. It has its own registry with three tiers. Here's how it works.

The Three Tiers

Brangus / Red Brangus. The stabilized breed — exactly 3/8 Brahman + 5/8 Angus on paper, polled or scurred, with both parents registered. Black animals register as Brangus; red animals register as Red Brangus. This is the target you breed up to, and once reached it carries forward as 100% Brangus.

UltraBlack / UltraRed. The appendix tier — 12.5% to 87.5% Brangus on paper, with the remainder being Angus (UltraBlack, black) or Red Angus (UltraRed, red). No horn requirement. This is what you get when you cross a Brangus back onto straight Angus.

Foundation Brangus. The breed-up ladder — an intermediate Angus × Brahman cross that has both breeds present but hasn't hit the exact 3/8 + 5/8 ratio yet. Requires both parents registered (Angus, Red Angus, Brahman, or Brangus). These are the stepping stones toward your first stabilized Brangus.

How the Tiers Stack

The game checks them from most-stabilized down:

Brangus → Ultra → Foundation

An animal at exactly 3/8 + 5/8 (and black/red and polled/scurred) becomes a Brangus. An animal with real Brangus ancestry in the 12.5–87.5% range becomes Ultra. A pure Angus × Brahman cross with no Brangus blood yet falls to Foundation.

Building Your First Brangus

Since there are no Gen 0 Brangus, the first one takes a few generations. You can't reach 3/8 Brahman + 5/8 Angus in a single cross — an F1 Angus × Brahman is 1/2 + 1/2. So you work the Foundation ladder:

Cross registered Angus and Brahman to make Foundation animals, then breed those Foundation animals together (and back onto Angus) until the paper percentages land on exactly 3/8 Brahman + 5/8 Angus. At that point — if the animal is black or red and polled or scurred — it registers as Brangus. From there, Brangus × Brangus breeds true.

Things to Know

The ratio has to be exact

Brangus is exactly 3/8 Brahman + 5/8 Angus — not "close enough." An animal at 1/4 Brahman or 1/2 Brahman isn't a Brangus; it's a Foundation animal still building toward the target.

The horn gate only applies to the top tier

Brangus and Red Brangus must be polled or scurred. UltraBlack and UltraRed have no horn requirement — only the stabilized breed enforces it.

Color routes black vs red

At the top tier, black animals become Brangus and red animals become Red Brangus. For the appendix tier, black goes to UltraBlack (remainder Angus) and red goes to UltraRed (remainder Red Angus).

You need registered foundation stock

Everything bootstraps from registered Angus and Brahman. Register your Angus and Brahman foundation animals first, or the Foundation crosses won't certify and you'll never reach a first Brangus.

It's paper percent, not genetics

Everything keys off the parents' registration papers, not raw genetic makeup. An unregistered Brahman contributes 0% Brahman to the ratio.

Summary

There are no Gen 0 Brangus — build them up. Cross registered Angus and Brahman into Foundation animals, breed toward exactly 3/8 Brahman + 5/8 Angus, and a black-or-red polled-or-scurred animal at that ratio becomes a Brangus (or Red Brangus). Crossing a Brangus back onto Angus gives you UltraBlack/UltraRed at 12.5–87.5% Brangus.
